BHP Depends on Atlas for Rapid Growth

Tuesday, 16 Dec 2008

BHP is relying on Atlas Rail to streamline its operations on the BHP IO Rapid Growth Project 4. Atlas Rail will supply a fully automated wheel demount press, an automated wheel press and various brake testing machines for the the Ore Car Repair Shop located in Port Hedland, Western Australia.

The objectives of the Rapid Growth Project 4 are to increase system capacity across BHP Billiton's Western Australian iron-ore operations to 155-million tons a year. This includes the development of a new crushing and screening plant, as well as new stockyards, car dumping and train loading facilities at Mount Whaleback. Additional infrastructure upgrades will be implemented at satellite ore bodies, and at BHP's rail and port operations.

The Atlas fully automated wheel demount press is able to quickly remove wheels from train axles. It has been designed to complete the process automatically and is capable of stripping the wheels from the axle in less than four minutes. The automated wheel press serves to re-press new wheels onto the train axles. It can be operated with an automated loading system as a means of decreasing overall cycle time.

Commissioning of the two machines is schedule for completion prior to the end of the year
