Ansaldo-STS Wins Heavy Haul Automation ProjectWednesday, 10 Dec 2008 Ansaldo -STS has won the contract to automate much of Rio Tinto's 1,300 km iron ore railway in the Pilbara. The Automatic Train Operation project is worth EUR 103 million to Ansaldo STS, and is the first time driverless technology has been used in such a large-scale heavy haul railway operation. When completed the driverless rail network will enable Rio Tinto to increase the efficiency of its iron ore network, while ensuring its continued safety and reliability.
