Ansaldo-STS Wins Heavy Haul Automation Project

Wednesday, 10 Dec 2008

Ansaldo -STS has won the contract to automate much of Rio Tinto's 1,300 km iron ore railway in the Pilbara. The Automatic Train Operation project is worth EUR 103 million to Ansaldo STS, and is the first time driverless technology has been used in such a large-scale heavy haul railway operation. When completed the driverless rail network will enable Rio Tinto to increase the efficiency of its iron ore network, while ensuring its continued safety and reliability.

The five key areas of work involved in the project are:

  • Upgrade of the existing wayside signalling and asset protection equipment
  • Design and installation of a Wide Area Data Network communications system
  • Development and design of interface software for locomotive control systems
  • and the driving strategy system
  • Installation of upgraded onboard locomotive equipment
  • Modification to the existing train control facility to incorporate automatic train
  • operation.
  • This is the third and final phase of the highly specialised ATO project that Ansaldo-STS has been working on with Rio Tinto.
